Bowen Therapy in Bristol at the Chiron Centre

Bowen Therapy (or ‘The Bowen Technique’) was developed in Australia by Tom Bowen in the 1950s. It is a gentle, yet effective way of helping people to relax deeply and achieve stress relief without resorting to manipulation, needles, pills or massage.

No forceful manipulation is used. The therapist uses their thumbs and index fingers to perform a series of gentle rolling moves over muscles, ligaments and tendons. These moves can be done over thin clothing.

These very precise and subtle moves aim to release muscle tension promoting a deep sense of relaxation. Your body is then prompted to readjust itself. A feature of Bowen Therapy is that nothing is forced to happen.

What Conditions can Bowen Therapy help with?
Bowen Therapy may be used, alongside conventional medicine, to help with a spectrum of conditions ranging from stress, aiding relaxation and sleep to promoting a sense of well-being. However, it should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice.

Because Bowen Therapy treats the individual as an integrated system, it may be beneficial for those people who are suffering from long-term conditions. Such conditions usually involve a complex combination of factors, and so may respond well to a holistic therapy like Bowen.

Would I benefit from Bowen Therapy?
Anyone, from newborn babies to the elderly, who is feeling stressed or under-par may benefit from Bowen Therapy. However, it should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice.

It is particularly suitable for pregnant women, as it is one of the few therapies that can be used throughout the whole pregnancy.

What does a treatment feel like?
A Bowen Therapy treatment is usually done whilst you are lying down on a comfortable couch, although it can also be done whilst you are seated if this is more comfortable for you. There are regular pauses between moves, as this allows time for your body to respond. A treatment session frequently results in a deep sense of overall relaxation.

How many treatments will I need?
As each person and their condition are unique, the number of treatments will vary. Simple, acute problems may be resolved quite quickly, whilst longer-standing problems may require more treatments. Initially, the treatments are weekly; thereafter, if required, treatments become less frequent. Many people in good health come back for regular treatments to maintain optimal body balance. Do come and see me at the Chiron Centre in Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol.
